Back in the 1920s, the TUDOR watch name was trademarked on behalf of Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex. In the 1940s, Wilsdorf took over the brand and went on to set up the company Montres TUDOR SA with the aim of producing a more affordable range of watches that continued to share the reputation for quality and reliability established by Rolex.
Building on that heritage, TUDOR’s Black Bay watch range, introduced in 2012, represents more than a passing nod to the iconic TUDOR diver’s watches of the 1950s and 1960s, while establishing their own modern-day reputation for reliability and quality. And now there’s a new watch to add to the Black Bay collection.
Stainless steel and yellow gold
This year, TUDOR introduced the Black Bay GMT S&G. Featuring multiple time zones, the watch has a 24-jour graduated rotating bezel with two colours, brown representing day and black representing night, as well as the brand’s distinctive ‘snowflake hands’.
Other notable features include a satin brushed and polished case in stainless steel and yellow gold – hence the S&G in its name; a domed grained matt black dial; and, a choice of three bracelet designs: black Jacquard fabric, aged brown leather, or riveted 316L steel and yellow gold.
Woven in France
The fabric strap is a hallmark of TUDOR. Woven in France, on 19th Century Jacquard looms by the Julien Faure company in the St-Etienne region, its manufacturing quality and comfort on the wrist are unique. For the Black Bay GMT S&G, TUDOR has selected a black strap with a beige band woven using this traditional craft.
