It’s that time of year when many will start thinking about their Christmas shopping, looking for that unique gift for a friend or loved one. It’s one thing deciding to shop, however, whether in person or online, but it’s an altogether more challenging task to know exactly what gift would make the perfect present.
Jewellery is often at the top of the Christmas list but, given all the choice out there, where to start? Fortunately, Cheltenham jeweller Martin & Co’s experts, diamond specialists, and watch enthusiasts are on hand to offer their three key top present buying tips for jewellery and watches: consider your budget; understand the lifestyle and interests of who you are buying for; and make sure that the gift reflects their personal style.
Know your budget
It sounds obvious, but have you sat down and considered how much you want to spend? The last thing you want to do is find that perfect gift and then realise it will cost considerably more than you intended. So, think about the budget, know your price point and then you’re ready for our next tip.
Match the lifestyle and interests
When buying someone jewellery or a beautiful watch, think about their lifestyle and interests. Do they spend a lot of time outdoors, for example, which might mean their jewellery will also need to be practical? How often do they attend special occasion events? Can you imagine when and where they would wear the piece of jewellery or watch you’re buying? Try and put yourself in their shoes and it will help you narrow your search and find a gift that they will always treasure.
Make it personal
Next, ensure that the gift you buy reflects the personal style of the recipient. “It’s important to be in tune with your customer’s taste,” says Martin & Co’s Sharron. “We keep a note of pieces that our customers have looked at or liked during the year and we use this to help create a wish list. It’s helpful to look at the kind of jewellery they already own to find something to match and make a perfect partner. For example, if a customer has a pair of diamond earrings, perhaps look at a diamond pendant to match.” Understanding colour is also key advises Martin & Co’s Finn: “The colour of the jewellery is a vital consideration, whether they wear yellow or white gold or choosing a piece with a stone of the customer’s favourite colour or even their birth stone.”
